About Kirsty

b. 1987 Sydney

Hailing from the Northern Beaches of NSW, Kirsty Neilson is known for her captivating and emotive paintings that convey a deep sense of humanity and compassion to her subject. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting, Kirsty's work has been recognized through prestigious Australian art prizes including the Archibald Prize, Portia Geach Memorial Award, Darling Portrait Prize, and Mosman Art Prize. Kirsty's skillful use of color and technique has earned her a reputation as a fine portrait and landscape artist. Some of the recognisable faces she has painted include Ita Buttrose, Garry McDonald, Judith Neilson, Grace Tame, Rachel Ward, Christine Manfield, and Andrew Quilty.

Kirsty's current practice involves en plein air painting and working from life when painting portraits. Her recent work has led her to the countryside where she captures the beauty of the natural world in her landscapes. Kirsty's work tells stories of justice and truth as she draws from her own experiences including witnessing poverty and suffering in third world countries. Through her paintings, Kirsty uses her platform to advocate for those with powerful messages that need to be heard. She brings awareness to untouched topics and to inspire others to act.

In addition to her artistic pursuits, Kirsty is also an ambassador for the Barbara May Foundation, which works to provide healthcare services to mothers and babies in rural Africa. Kirsty's heart beats for justice, women, and those less fortunate. She has been involved in several humanitarian projects, including multiple builds in Uganda and working with girls rescued from sex trafficking in Cambodia. Whilst on one of her many trips to Cambodia, Kirsty and the Esther’s Voice team provided art therapy to the girls, giving them an outlet for their trauma and a sense of healing through creativity. Through these experiences, Kirsty has developed a deep sense of wanting to help those less fortunate, and has been moved to use her art to shed light on important global issues.

Kirsty's passion for helping others is evident in everything she does, from her humanitarian work to teaching kids' art classes. Her love for art and her desire to make a positive impact in the world is a powerful combination, and she continues to inspire others with her art and her actions.

Kirsty is currently represented by Nanda Hobbs Contemporary, Sydney.
